Police swarm bar after man's comment about cop

Seattle police are questioning a man who was taken into custody at the Lock & Keel Tavern on Wednesday night, and witnesses said the man was mumbling something about what he did to "that cop."

Police spokesman Mark Jamieson said the man was being questioned, but he would not comment on the witness statements, why the man was arrested, or whether the man was a suspect in the killing of officer Timothy Brenton.

A person in the bar called police after hearing the man make the reference to an officer about 10:30 p.m., and nearly 20 police cars surrounded the bar and blocked off 20th Avenue NW and Ballard Avenue NW.

The man had been drinking and playing pool by himself before making the comment.

Witnesses said officers had guns drawn as they entered the bar and arrested the man.

Jerimiah Ham was smoking outside when he saw officers carrying rifles approaching the bar.

"Everybody was silent. They were being really serious with the guy, making sure he didn't have any weapons on him," Ham said. "After about 15 minutes they put him in the car and drove away."

Ham said the man appeared extremely confused about the arrest.

Sounds like a little over-reaction.  Dont get me worng, they need to find the guy who killed Officer Brenton, but are they going to use that excuse to detain everyone?

Anonymous's picture

It may be an over reacction but you never know.  Clearly, this shows how bad the cops want to get this guy.  And clearly, one hit on a cop is a hit on all cops... they will make an example out of the guy once they catch the right guy.

"Sounds like a little over-reaction"

Your just one of those people who whine about everything and never give an alternative or explanation.  What you have them do ignore the comment?  Or maybe do everything possible to investigate a solid lead.  Its always the same with you people if you were personally involved you'd be singing a different tune.  What if it were your child, spouse, or parent wouldn't you want the police to do everything they could, especially if it is completely legal?

Haw-haw!

If he not the one than maybe he should learn to keep he mouth shut.

Perhaps the suspect didn't say a thing, and the 'witnesses' had it out for him?

Just being devil's advocate, there.  Just to say that this situation is a hotbed of tension, everywhere.  I certainly hope the real killer, whether this guy or not, is caught soon.

I am happy to hear that they are taking ever lead very seriously.

He's probally just a jacka$$, with a loud mouth..

I don't think the police overreacted, considering all that has happened he got what he deserved.

Let's hope nobody gets too hot and heavy; don't want to see anyone else get shot.

Anonymous's picture

I wonder if this much attention will be placed on every person that gets shot while sitting in there car.

Yea, this is LAME.  SPD totally goes nuts.  This is why SPD sucks and will always suck.

DJ HALL's picture

I think SPD is doing there job. What is lame is all you people that do not care. There is no over reaction at all. If somebody says a peep about a police officer even referencing a negative comment at this moment they will take you out. First if you make a comment in a bar shooting off your mouth to look cool you get what you deserve. SPD is not going to f around. They are on a man hunt. What Downtown Seattle needs is better Security Cameras like big brother. I would vote on a Security Bill for Seattle. The world is a Vampire and we need more protection. Anyone committing a crime is going down. I have a family and so does half of the normal people in Seattle. Anyone who has a negative comment on Police doing their job is guilty of being just as big of a jack a$$ as the guy who made the comment. I hope Seattle Police crack down on this loser. You do not joke around like that. And if the kid in the bar made up that about him, I hope they prosecute his dumb a$$. No over reaction. This is just the beginning. SPD is on a man hunt. People in Seattle that are out fing around deserve what they get. My thoughts go out to the Officers family. My god help SPD find this %rick.

Good thing he wasn't more inebriated: then they might have Tasered him, he would have jerked, and they would have "had to" kill him maybe.

Well, the point is, it sounds like the SPD is pretty trigger-happy right now - "understandable", but really, really dangerous. I hope they don't go multiplying this cop-killing tragedy!

LET THE HUNT BEGIN

Anonymous's picture

The reason this much attention is placed on this murder is because this man's family is enormous.  Police officers, firmen and first responders are a family and everyone of them hurts, helps and responds when one of their family is murdered.  As I am sure everyone in your family would pay attention as well.

I sincerely hope this lead and this man is the one responsible or at the very least "knows" something or is involved. Of course our officers are responding with vigilance. This murder was not only an attack on a well respeceted police officer but it was and is a threat to our country and our immediate area. Yes it got "media" attention and not all killings and murders do. However not all murdered people risk their lives daily to try and keep the rest of us safe from that very thing and more. I personally know this man as more than a police officers in fact as a husband, father and devoted family man. I don't think the SPD is "trigger" happy BUT they mean to catch the person responsible and give the family closure on this senseless and outrageous crime! I hope they do and it won't hurt my feelings if they do put him away for life. He has forever changed the lives of many and deserves what he gets.

Today however is our place to mourn the loss of a husband, father, family man and a brother to many in his profession. To understand the depth of the loss that this family is and will continue to endure.

Dan in Seattle's picture

I know "Seattle" is a city open to a lot of different points of view. I didn't know it was also the home to so many uninformed, STUPID people. This officer was not just killed in the line of duty, he was KILLED IN COLD BLOOD! It's people like those commenting about the "overreaction", the shoot-from-the-hip mentality of the SPD that would be the 1st to complain not this gut pulled out a gun an hour  later and started blowing people away.

Anonymous's picture

No disrespect to the SPD for doing their job the best they can, but in hindsight it does seem like an overreaction. In all honest, I SERIOUSLY DOUBT the killer would be foolish enough to mouth off now that the Seattle Police are on the hunt for him. But it was a pretty tactless thing to say in a time like this when the Cops are particularly trigger happy. So people, take heed: Better keep your mouth SHUT about Officer Brenton and the Seattle Police unless you want to end up like this man did.

Anonymous's picture

The problem is not with the SPD, but in the media's reporting of the incident. I heard this in real time on a police scanner and there are several facts omitted in the reporting shown here. A person from the bar did call the police and did state the person was "mumbling something about what he did to that cop." But prior to that he had reportedly also said "I'm going to be going away for a very long time" and saying he had done something very bad. The report also was that the man was crying at the time. It was also reported to the police that he had a handgun tucked in his waistband.

So, if someone is saying publicly that they did something bad to "that cop" and has is reported to have a handgun on him, maybe the police's reaction is not so unwarranted afterall.

It helps to get the facts, but the media rarely tells you the whole story.

Did they get the guy?
