Voters approve both Seattle Schools levies

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Wednesday, February 10th, 10:07am

Voters approved overwhelmingly approved both Seattle Schools levies, with 26.14 percent of registered voters participating in yesterday's special election.

For Proposition 1, the capital levy, 71.38 percent approved the measure. For Proposition 2, the operations levy, 71.82 percent of voters supported the levy.

The levies will go into effect in 2011.

Some districts seeking voter approval to sell bonds or levies build new buildings are not sure if those measures will pass. Bonds require a 60 percent super-majority.

A bond measure in the Lake Washington School District is failing in early returns. The bond would pay for converting the district's high schools from three-year schools to four-year schools to ease overcrowding in other schools.

A construction bond in Marysville is also failing. A capital levy in Federal Way also appears to be failing.

A workshop will be held at Garfield Community Center on Mar. 22 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Trained facilitators will lead participants through a group discussion.  If you are interested in volunteering with the Initiative, please contact Sol Villarreal in the Mayor’s Office at sol.villarreal@seattle.gov or 206-233-2656.

Parents rally to keep kids together

Submitted by Rose Egge on Wednesday, January 6th, 01:40pm

Parents will gather tonight outside the Seattle Public Schools headquarters to rally in support of keeping siblings in the same school. They say the new student assignment plan will keep some students from attending the school where their older siblings are students.

With the new student assignment maps going into effect this fall, students entering Seattle Public Schools for the first time will be assigned to a school based on the attendance area they live in. This may or may not be the school their older siblings are currently enrolled in.

Lucie Campbell, a parent in the Seattle Public School system and member of the Keep Our Kids Together group, says that it will hurt schools and hurt families if parents have to transport students to two different places, and divide their commitments.

Seattle Schools early enrollment extended

Submitted by Rose Egge on Wednesday, December 16th, 02:25pm

The Early Enrollment registration deadline has been extended until Jan. 15 for students who will be new to Seattle Public Schools.

Early registration does not have an impact on where a student is assigned to school, but families who have students registering early will receive their school assignment notification prior to the Open Enrollment period which starts Mar. 1.

Students enrolling during the Open Enrollment period will receive their school assignment notifications in late spring.
